Session II: Information Literacy Assessment: Assessing Teaching & LearningThis is a featured page

Assessing the effectiveness of librarians & library instruction in teaching & learning is complex! Join us for a discussion of tools, decisions, outcomes, & evaluation methods for information literacy teaching & learning.

While each of the four librarians presenting have approached the questions with different pressures behind them and with different campus cultures in front of them, all faced the challenge of assessing teaching done largely through single sessions designed at least in part to meet objectives other than their own. The variety of responses to that challenge also represent the difficulties of developing assessment methods that measure the chosen element: teaching? Or learning?

In addition to discussing assessment challenges, methodologies and the efficacy of the attempts, this panel will also discuss why we assess and how we use the results. We will discuss library efforts, the role collaboration, and how assessing learning is influenced by the role of the librarian in course development and design.
